There are four basic types of tissue: epithelium, connective tissue, muscle, and nerve tissue. The first of these, epithelial tissue, consists of groups or sheets of cells that: cover exterior body surfaces, line internal cavities, line the inner surfaces of tubular structures (think gi tract), vascular structures, and smaller tubular structures.
