Document Summary

Landslide : land moves because the shear stress on the slope exceeds its shear strength. Resistance of the slope to movement is overcome by stress. Shear stress : force per unit are, parallel to the slide. Shear strength : resistance of the slope to movement. Two blocks moving relative to each other. Like arm wrestling: stationary and then slips. Land position reflects the forces acting on it. Either strength decreases, stress increases, or both. A landslide reflects a change in shear strength and stress. Either shear strength decreases or shear stress increases. This change can happen slowly over time or all at once. Landslides associated with effects of other disasters such as earthquakes and mudflows. Different names for different types of landslides (mass movements) based on velocity and water content. Faster flows are more deadly but all landslides have caused death and property damage.
