Kelsi McDougle Rhetoric II Research Paper Proposal For my research paper on The Lord of the Rings, I will be focusing on the presence, influence, and behaviors of trees in the different forests. Nature resumes a vital role throughout the story as it provides challenges that the Company must overcome as well as a reason for saving Middle-earth. Tolkien repeatedly idealizes nature, for example with his descriptions of Lothlórien and when he praises the aesthetic practices of the Elves. Trees frequently reappear as important members of nature, but they often display characteristics reflective of the mortals.
