September 6, 2013 The two basic forms of communication before the computer era: Telephone Instantaneous Real time Wired connection Mail Permanently stored Couple of days to receive More robust than telephones, connection route not permanently set The US DOD chose a digital packet based system in accordance with the mail system because it  proved to be more robust Packet Address of sender Address of the recipient Message IP address (Internet Protocol Address)  Used to be static (one computer, one address) Currently dynamic (IP address varies on the server used to connect to the internet)  Servers have static IP addresses whereas consumers in general have dynamic IP  addresses Parts of the current computer Internet pathway can be down or not working, but the system as a  whole can still distributes the message. Routers look at a “packet” analyze it, and send it on to  the next router. There is no set number of router stops that
