Communication is an integral piece of our lives. Social learning occurs through communication in classrooms and in play. Classrooms are structured to be communication-rich environments. Language difference - different dialect (ex: somebody from the south speaks differently from somebody from new. York), english language learners (their primary language is not english) Language exceptionality - child has difficulty communicating in every language environment, including their home environment. Important to be sensitive to cultural differences and respect dialects. Speech and language pathologists (slps) provide interventions for students who have communication disorders. Considered a related service, much like phyiscal therapy, counseling, occupational therapy, etc. Services can be delivered in a therapy room and/or in the general education classroom. Great collaboration between slp and general education teacher is required in order to maximize student progress. Communication disorder - impairs the ability to transmit or receive facts, ideas, feelings, and desires, may involve language, speech, or both, may include hearing, listening, reading, and/or writing.
