Genly al: representative of ekumen (collection of all known planets in galaxy), envoy, ambassador: job is to convince these people to join gethenians in ekumen. For one week out of the month they become either male or female so that they can have sex and give birth. Gender is not the primary way that humans have of interacting with each. Incest is permitted on this planet cannot marry brother/sister but can have sex because your parents might not be the same parents: can have same person as mother or father. Kemmer: when they develop characteristics of male or female. Arch overarching and connects things: male and female, genthen and ekumen etc.
