PHIL1070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Evodius
Document Summary
Political, religious, and social upheaval was rampant. Converts to christianity and is eventually sainted. Wrote on: grace, sin, and the good life. Functions as a dialogue between augustine and his bff evodius. Shows really good friendship can foster greater understanding. If you are taught something because learning is good good cannot be bad because the skills aren"t evil the will behind the skills are evil. You can"t blame desires (acting on them maybe) 4 possibilities: law breaking, law can be wrong, evil predates law, not following golden rule, not everyone likes to be treated the same way, bdsm for example. Excessive unavoidable desire: causes irrational actions, no mean or moderation. Love of things one can lose against one"s will. How can we tell if actions are lustful: Civil laws can"t tell us good and evil. Eternal laws will help us to live perfectly. Animals can live, but only humans can live well. Qualities of our minds and spirit are different.
