PHIL1070 Lecture 21: Rousseau_
Document Summary
No point in investigating natural inequality because it literally is what it says it is. There is no connection between natural and systemic inequalities. This is rousseau"s hypothetical on how society was formed not a history. Hobbes and locke are wrong because they didn"t go back far enough in history and applied governmental terms to a place they hadn"t yet been defined. Rousseau is looking for origins of inequality not just government so he needs to dissolve society and government to find this. Man is still not the same as an animal. 2 differentiating qualities between man and animal. Self perfection: fix problems, ability to learn better ways to do things. Mother needs to nurse child so the baby will stop crying. Then she gets used to the kid and likes it due to habit.
