The church"s power was built on its control of knowledge, which is why anyone who questioned its ideologies was condemned as a heretic, and why the thoughts contained in the hidden book were so threatening. William"s methods of inquiry, his and adso"s thoughts on women, and the potential power of that one book, show how fragile the medieval philosophy of the church was at that time.
