Sorcery is an attempt to manipulate spirits psychologically- appease, blame, bribe, etc. Magic is simply the belief that human wishing makes it so. How do we think our human minds can influence the external world: contagious magic: displacement, imitative magic: condensation. Wishing can make it so through condensation or displacement. We believe that somehow we are tuned into a force- a religious belief without a god. We have the feeling that the universe in in tune with our psyche. Freud thinks that we should grow out of our belief. That is the very progress from animism religion scientific. It"s important because it creates the basis of his argument for morality.
