Widen & russel labeling: examine development of emotion categories in young children, 2. 5 yo start out, at 3 yo, kids on average start saying happy . After that, kids usually have a negative emotion word (angry or sad: 54 months scared + surprised, 6 yo disgusted. How do children interpret the disgust face: children can generate situations that would be described with the word disgust or disgusting by age 4, but commonly label the disgust face as anger even up through age 7. Up until age 7, kids usually label disgust face as anger face. Wilden & russel sorting: children age 2-5, asked to label facial expressions, next, categorization task, compare how kids do on labeling task vs categorizing. But errors by valence (even after correct label) Emotion across the lifespan 3 adolescence and older adulthood. Adolescence: from puberty (13/14) through adult level independence.
