Insecure attachment can take the form of anxious attachment (crave acceptance, watch out for rejection) or affection and intimacy avoidant attachment (discomfort getting close to others, maintain distance) Romanian case study families with fewer than 5 children: grew up without healthy attachments to at least one adult in orphanages. Romanian in 1970s and 1980s -> nicolae ceausescu outlawed contraception, forbade abortion, and taxed. Socially deprived children had lower intelligence scores, reduced brain development, abnormal stress, 4x rate of adhd. Children growing up under adversity become resilient -> become well-adjusted adults. Extreme early trauma may leave footprints on the brain. By sensitizing stress response system, early stress can permanently heighten reactions to later stress.
