PSYC2241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Minimal Group Paradigm, Aversive Racism, Symbolic Racism
Document Summary
Modern, aversive and benevolent forms of prejudice. Modern racism (=symbolic racism): a rejection of explicit racism, but with ongoing, unacknowledged negative attitudes. Experienced more by people who think of themselves as conservative. Such that if obtainment is unequal, that is contributed to lack of effort. In both cases the prejudice comes from the gap between bias expressed explicitly (none) and bias expressed implicitly (more than none) Aversive racism: explicit endorsement of egalitarianism, with ongoing implicit negative attitudes (the awareness of which is aversive to the holder of these attitudes) Problem is belief that everyone should attain equal status. Focus on fact that there are possibly systemic reasons people are not. Experienced more by people who think of themselves as liberal. The minimal group paradigm (more on slides) Groups are transparently arbitrary (over-estimators and under-estimators) Trying to look at where this comes from.
