Defense mechanisms: somehow i satisfy my wishes by something that happens to you. Part of the formation of the superego. Everything is latent except for the manifest, very obvious layer. Allows anything to happen given any current state of affairs. Wrote papers for a number of years to answer the relationship between the brain and the mind. He was interested in mental diseases, illnesses, etc. Tried things like cocaine as a cure for mental disorders. He was doing what neuroscientists now try to do relationship between mind and brain. Gave up eventually we don"t know enough about the brain and the mind. He burned all his papers and said forget it. What we can do is try to understand the mind and we know it"s related to the brain, but we are not there yet. Mind is just a manifestation of physical properties. Almost nothing that freud said that he didn"t incorporate into his own theory of things.
