Document Summary

Represents a very different approach to conceptualizing development of clinical problems and treating them. Not really a single approach rather a collection of techniques designed to address psychological problems (like relaxation training, bell-and-pad conditioning technique) These techniques can be general or specific (such as just for bed-wetting problems) Used to treat both children and adults. Overt behaviors (observable behaviors presented) and environmental conditions that produce them (accompany the behaviors) Second wave introduced as cognitive psych took hold. People respond more to perceptions of environment, not just what is happening. Acknowledges perception of the environment might differ from reality. Third wave focus on functional relations between internal representations and overt behavior. Connection between internal representation and overt behaviors. Emphasize importance of accepting unwanted thoughts, feelings and emotions, rather than trying to control or directly change them. Also involve teaching clients to become aware of what is important to them, clarifying values, and accepting thoughts/feelings.
