Document Summary

Combines the theories and techniques of behavior therapy and cognitive therapy. Emphasizes assessment of current symptoms and context in which they occur. Less of an emphasis on historical factors/global personality variables. Structured, often manualized there are manuals that students of cbt techniques will actually use and learn from and continue to use as they do their good, clinical work. So, we see that cbt today has a wide appeal. Most behavior therapists consider cognitions, and most cognitive therapists consider behaviors. In practice, distinctions between both therapies have pretty much disappeared. Approaches of both orientations have been combined. Wide range of techniques developed by both behavioral and cognitive therapists. How they use these interventions depends on how they have assessed their clients. Active dialog back and forth between patient and clinician. Used commonly with borderline personality disorder and other disorders where there is aggressive acting out. Confront trauma from the past that may contribute to current emotional difficulties.
