Document Summary

Procedural memory/habit memory doing something without thinking about it. A surgeon performs a hip replacement without thinking about it. We tie our shoes without thinking about it. Doesn"t mean we are not conscious we are paying attention. Habit memory is mediated by the basal ganglia and the cerebellum. Involuntary (the actual walking - one foot in front of another) Cerebellum is above the brainstem in the back. Motor strip in front of central sulcus. Has pyramidal neurons that goes to synapses in spinal cord. Process things, sent to frontal cortex, integrate it with memory, decide to move, send to prefrontal cortex, send to motor cortex move. Planning part figure out the strategy. Pick something you know how to do really well, close your eyes and imagine doing it. This activates neurons in prefrontal cortex that were thinking about strategies associated with moving around firing action potentials associated with it.
