PSYC3338 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Thought Disorder, Communication Problems, Solitude
Document Summary
Schizophrenia - a disorder of thought; disconnection with reality. It is a collection of neurodevelopmental disruptions that involve alterations in brain circuits. Regarded as a (cid:1445)thought disorder(cid:1446) tics and tourette"s aren"t thought disorders. Schizophrenia -- whole problem is disordered thoughts that don"t jive with the reality that the rest of us accept as reality. Not that there is only 1 true reality, but society accepts certain things about what is or isn"t, what is truth or fiction, etc. Stability of society depends on our shared sense of reality or normal behavior. People who are schizophrenic don"t share that shared reality some, but not all causes them to stand out and makes it difficult for them to function in a relationship, family, university, job, government position, etc. We are talking about brain functions responsible for ordered thought. People generally talk about disordered thought in relation to positive/negative symptoms. Interesting scheme to describe attributes of schizophrenia comes from a mental health website.
