Technology & Society Education & Technology Lecture 31, • Agriculture economy  ▯US became an industrial economy from the Industrial  Revolution until the 1960s/70s o Then entered the post­industrial/service economy until the 90s o We started to outsource factory jobs • Knowledge Economy = today o This is an economy in which production and services are based on  knowledge­intensive activities o Information economy; requires new set of skills  o Creativity became the hallmark, a trait you need to teach o Ex. Software development, media (TV, movies, music), scientific  knowledge o At the heart of the knowledge economy is technology  The Internet, smartphones, GPS, etc. • Globalization too – collaborating, knowledge gaps, etc. o It doesn’t matter how many resources you have, if you don’t know how to  use them, it will never be enough  • Wikipedia (Wikipedia = WalesSanger) o Created in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger o They did not come up with the idea of a wiki = type of collaborative  website; they wanted to create a user generated encyclopedia; peoples’  knowledge should be used o It currently has over 26 million articles  In over 286 different languages o 100,000 collaborators o it is currently the 6  most visited website in the world (and that is only the  English version of the site) o product of this age • How has Wikipedia changed our world? o The destruction of traditional gatekeepers  French government and “The Streisand Effect” • Wikipedia had made some public information very public
