Week 6 class notes: february 24, 2017- suicide prevention, Children with bipolar disorder have more rapidly changing moods compared with adults. Have feelings like any adolescent, but cannot control them. Bipolar children have high risk for suicide. Every case is different with bipolar in children- commonality is that they are all unable to control their moods. Adolescents and young adults make up for 10. 9% of suicides- 3rd leading cause of death among this age group. Suicide is 10th leading cause of death for all americans. 2013- highest suicide rates in 45-64 age range. There are 3 female attempts for every 1 male attempt. Males are 3. 75 times more likely to complete suicide. 2013- 12% of youths in public high school reported that they seriously considered suicide in the past year. 11% made a plan, 6% made an attempt. Parents should watch middle school students" phones/internet use and tell their children they will monitor it.
