Document Summary

Biological anthropology (bioarchaeology -- study of human remains with arch. ) Investigate material remains of human cultures and past study early fossil evidence -- look at genetics etc. lots of primate studies. In many other countries (eu, britain), archaeology is its own department. Archaeology = study of the human past through its material remains. Consists of material remains that can be recovered and interpreted. Oral history recordings: study of ancient history or prehistory, study of recent history, study of culture change. Written documents are limited to 5000 years ago. Archaeology gives us information from before the historical record. People without writing were considered people without history. Native americans seem to be stuck in an unchanging past until europeans wrote about. Prehistory can be a demeaning term -- suggesting lack of history. Ancient history and pre-colonial history is the word preferred. We will look at excluded pasts in california. Not the big-game hunters like the rest of america.
