● I. Postwar politics of racism
○ Northern Liberals and Southern white supremacists
○ By 1948: Democratic National Convention
■ African Americans protesting (picketing)
■ Announcing that it was time the Democratic party went towards human
rights
■ Southern white supremacists marched out waving a confederate flag and
formed the States Rights Party
○ States Rights Party ‘Dixie Crafts’
■ Strom Thurmond: ran for president
○ President called for desegregation of the Military
○ Soviet Anti-Racist Propaganda
■ Soviets wanted to make it seem like they did not believe in racism
○ 1955 Houston Airport:
■ Restaurant refused to serve the ambassador of India because he was not
white
● II. Segregation
○ A. Brown decision (1954)

■ Brown v Board of Education
● Ruled that segregation made kids feel inferior and this could not be
overturned
● ** only applied to public schools not private or religious school
● Banned segregation laws (white people __, black people __), not
de facto segregation (segregation on the ground based on where
people live)
● Ordered school districts to desegregate at an ‘all deliberate speed’,
by 1960, less than 1% of african american children were attending
segregated schools

the 14th amendment -- equal protection under the law
