A. Brown decision (1954)

overturned
** only applied to public schools not private or religious school
Banned segregation laws (white people __, black people __), not
de facto segregation (segregation on the ground based on where
people live)
Ordered school districts to desegregate at an ‘all deliberate speed’,
by 1960, less than 1% of african american children were attending
segregated schools
Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools could not be allowed under
the 14th amendment -- equal protection under the law
Case was organized and managed by the NAACP’s legal defense fund
