Mindfulness is a form of meditation, a non-judgmental awareness of the mind + body: focuses on an object, such as the breath, bodily sensations, thoughts, or sounds, other types of meditation: concentrative, open awareness, and kindness. Component 1: attention to the present moment: in doing so, we nd that most of our moments are good. Component 2: accepting, non-judgmental, and open attitude: teaches us to break the habit of judging everything + everyone we come across. Key insights from practicing mindfulness: thoughts are transient, eeting, thoughts + voices in your mind are not you, free from bias a kind awareness of the self. Deactivates the default mode network (mpc, pcc, hippocampus), which is the neurophysiological housing of the self less worrying about the self. Activates the temporal parietal junction, which is involved in memory/awareness of others. Activates the insula greater emotional attunement. Slower respiration rate greater feelings of calm.
