PSYC 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Procedural Memory, Sensory Memory, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
The retention of information or experience over time. Encoding- the process by which information gets put into memory storage: conscious or automatic a. i. Storage- how information is retained over time and represented in memory. The atkinson-shiffrin theory- memory storage involves 3 separate systems: sensory, short-term. Info used for brief period while being used. Selective attention- ability to focus only one stimulus from all sensory input. George miller"s magical number 7+ - theory. Echoic memory- auditory sensory memory: brief memory of something you just heard. Duration last longer than iconic memory (2-4 seconds) Eidetic imagery- ability to access visual sensory memory over a long period of time: not the same as photographic memory. Maintenance rehearsal- consistently attending to information in stm (short term memory) Elaborative rehearsal- remembering info by somehow making it more meaningful. A way to transfer info from stm to ltm. Working memory- a system that processes the information present in short term memory.
