Document Summary
An active system that receives information from the senses, organizes and alters that information as it stores it away, and then retrieves the information from storage: memory and its processes. Encoding: the information gets into our brains in a way that allows it to be stored. Storage: the information is held in a way that allows it to later be retrieved. External sensory events -> encoding-> sensory memory (all information lost in a second or so) -> selective attention-> short term memory (unrehearsed information is lost in about 15 to 30 seconds)-> consolidation. > long term memory (information is retained indefinitely although some info may be difficult to retrieve) -> retrieval-> maintencance rehearsal: sensory memory, sensory memory: the very first stage of memory. The point at which information enters the nervous system through the sensory systems: iconic memory: visual sensory memory; lasts only a fraction of a second. Capacity: everything that can be seen at one time.
