Document Summary

Variation in species to be ignored, unimportant, devil"s work - there to cloud mind. Understand god: lamarck - started evolutionary ball rolling. Species change look, behavior, phenotype - heritable: ex. Giraffes neck (longer necks = more food = healthier offspring) Evolution by acquired characteristics: charles darwin (and wallace, didn"t want credit) Variation is the key to understanding diversity and how species change. As a process: change in genetic (allele) frequency of a population over time: all species have a common ancestor, all species show change through time, all species change with respect to their environment. Process which evolution occurs: four components, trait variation in a population, heritability, differential reproduction, differential survival. Fitness: number of offspring you will have in your lifetime. Survival of genetic information, copies passed on from one generation to the next. Species are related: geographical proximity of similar, non-interbreeding species: ex. Ex. humans have hair, bats have wings, cats have tails, etc.
