Document Summary

Male-male competition results in a reduction in variance of reproductive success among males. Having lots of small offspring is an example of an r-selected trait. Anisogamy is a form of differential allocation of resources toward offspring between parents. A nuptial gift provides no increase in fitness to the male. Polygyny is when multiple males mate with one female in a reproductive season. Homeotic mutations result in appendages that look (theyre just in different spot) radically different from other appendages. Cis and trans-regulatory mutations can result in a change in the expression of a gene. An increase in predators will lead to traits becoming more r-selected. Natural selection favors a reduction in the variance of traits. Va is the most useful part of genetic variance because it allows you to predict similarities between parents and offspring. Transposable elements can be detrimental to the organism but never change the size of the genome.
