New & revolutionary idea bc it is is an individualistic justification of law and politics (not gods order) For men being all the workmanship of one omnipotent and infinitely wise maker- all the servants of one sovereign master, sent into the world by his order, and about his business- they are his property . We are all the subjects of god, you cannot harm another person bc they are the property of god. Hobbes argues that you could reasonably think that everyone could pose as a threat, defending your rational to harm them. We become equal through the moral law, and that gives us a reason not to destroy each other. Hobbes: prudential- doing what makes sense to preserve your life (one essential goal) Locke: moral law of nature (even if it doesnt help to preserve yourself) - categorical.
