Fertilization creates zygote (one celled organism formed by union of sperm and egg) Rapid cell division occurs and a mass of cells will migrate to the uterus. This mass will then implant into the uterine wall (aka implantation) Implantation forms the basis of what will become placenta. Placenta allows for the passage of oxygen and nutrients from mother"s blood stream to child and allows for excretion of child. 1 in 5 zygotes are rejected at this stage: embryonic stage.
