No connection with alcoholism (not that alcoholics drank too much and decided to end their lives) No greater incidence in gloomier north than in sunnier south. Higher (suicide rate) for protestants than for catholics. Higher suicide rate for catholics than for jews. Higher for single people than for widowed and divorced than for married least for married with children. Higher for members of the army than for civilians. Jewish communities were closer knit than catholics who were more than protestants. Married people had a sense of responsibility to their spouses or children and so were less likely to commit suicide.
