CAS AN 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Genetic Drift, Heredity, Advantageous
Document Summary
Zuk: there is a danger in the notion that biology can explain all gender differences in modern humans. It might be used to argue for the naturalness or certain roles. Zuk: we often assume that what is natural is good, but what is natural can"t be inherently good any more than it can be inherently amusing. Sexual selection: usually works in two ways (we see the opposite sometimes & also culture complicates this): Male competition: males compete for access to females, the amount of time spent mating with females, and even whose sperm gets to fertilize her eggs. Female choice: female choice which males to mate with, how long to mate, and whose sperm will fertilize her egg; sexuality selective features are not always advantageous in other ways. Another interesting observation by hewlett: has to do with intrinsic and extrinsic values placed on certain gendered activities.
