Earth was proven to be a sphere approximately 2,500 years ago. Earth was proven to go around the sun approximately 400 years ago. Our solar system is in the milky way. The milky way galaxy is in a local group. Local group is in the local supercluster. Define: star- a large glowing ball of gas that generates heat and light through nuclear fusion. Define: solar system (or star system)- a system consisting of the sun, the planets, their moons, and countless objects including rocky asteroids and icy comets. Define: planet- a moderately large object that revolves around the sun or a star. Define: moon- an object that orbits a planet. Define: asteroid - a relatively small and rocky object that orbits a star. Nonspherical in shape b/c it"s small so its own gravity is not strong enough to be able to compress itself into a sphere. Define: comet - a relatively small and icy object orbiting a star.
