Document Summary

Overview of cardiovascular system the heart is a pump at the center of 2 intertwining circulatory systems: The pulmonary circulation, which delivers blood to the lungs where it gets oxygenated. The systemic circulation, which brings blood to all the tissues in the body, thus brining oxygen to all the cells of the body an removing carbon dioxide. The blue depicts deoxygenated blood; the red depicts oxygenated blood. As the blood leaves the left side and goes through the aorta and so on until it reaches the capillaries, it does not change. At the site of the capillaries, it changes (gas exchange occurs with the tissues surrounding the capillaries). In the systemic circulation arteries carry oxygenated blood and veins carry deoxygenated blood. There is more heart muscle mass on the left side. The lungs surround the heart on either side. The mediastinum is the region of the thoracic cavity between the lungs (where the heart is).
