Once you capture the energy it is called energy surplus which is used for maintenance, growth, storage, reproduction, protection and obtain more energy. Natural selection operates on the way energy is collected, they are able to outcompete species. Heterotrophs - obtain energy from other organisms. Small lizards are carnivores eat ants, large lizards are herbivores ( doesn"t make sense for large lizard to chase down ants because there is a low eroi)
