The population was spread out due to the mountains. Only 10% of the greek territory could be used as a human habitation, and the soil was not suitable for agriculture. Had a lot of work to do to survive. A handful of people could easily dominate each population (think of developing countries like haiti) There was no slavery, but people were basically enslaved by military force. Eastern mediterranean were engaged in trade, but greeks did not produce anything. Using their location, they shipped or transported goods from the north to other countries. To do so, people had to explore, try new things, and learn new languages. After trial and error, greeks began to develop so rapidly in technology, art, and literature wise. Every character is a king, but there is no character who is not a jerk.
