Rome had geographic advantages that could control mediterranean. Width of the territory was 3000 mi between east and west, and each region could be in touch with one another. The whole sea was one macro economy. Many coastal communities, economically not sufficient, traded with each other. In 90% of the sea, one could see lands; navigation was very easy. Weather was great since storms would hit the coast and moved up to the. Surrounded by mountains along the shoreline natural defensive barrier. Rome was the first empire that was created for human unity. Romans didn"t occupy the places they conquered but put a person in charge of the territory. People were happier since they didn"t have to see romans unless the rebelled against them. The roman army conquered a territory and recruited soldiers there, offering to join multiethnic community and teaching latin. Army was a great social engine that mixed up the gene pool.
