The british government couldn"t get anything done after 1774. After lexington and concord, boston is under siege. British soldiers were not allowed to leave. The colonists tried to established a government and develop foreign alliances. Washington by this point had ascended as leader of the army. The second continental congress broke down resistance in the political body to independence. The 2nd congress did not meet to establish an independent state, initially. But events moved forward so fast that the 2nd congress was forced to make drastic decisions involved with developing an independent nation. Nothing really came out of the 1st congress. The fighting in ma led to the establishment of the 2nd congress. Fighting extended towards canada because colonists wanted to attack. Moderates -> john dickinson, pa pa farmer . Dickinson was afraid because he doubted that the colonies could win against the british empire. Radicals included richard henry lee, john adams, ben franklin.
