Part of a long existing war between france and britain the globalization of the war was what pushed the british to try to capture the southern states against the north. Seemed a good move but led to their defeat. 1775 -> 1776 -> no american army. The army was made up of volunteers. Without taxes, they could not raise money. They could only request requisitions from the states. Composed almost entirely of people from new england. The soldiers mainly did not have military experience. People flocked into the armies to show nationalism. But it was a struggle to get people to fight.
