Many of the peasants still lived in the countryside, by 1900 this had changed completely: agrarian urban. 30 year period: 25 million people moved from europe to america (migration to other countries as well, massive diffusion of european ideals to the entire world. They need more food for greater amount of people: they modernize technology. Materialism: a belief in material improvement and progress, a belief in progress: you can measure output; increased output was seen to lead to a better life, scientific ideas: darwin etc, central governments become more important. Liberal nationalism: best way for the individual to achieve full expression in the boundaries of a well organized state, protect nation, economic protections (tariffs) You have to modify some freedoms to ensure economic protection: working class ideologies. Europe is becoming more interdependent: finance becomes international, to achieve common goals, need global cooperation.
