CAS PS 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Visual Cortex, Retinotopy, Lightdark
Document Summary
The locations of differences in re ectance tell us relevant information. The spacial organization allows us to see the world as it is, to the extent that we can see. We want everything to be specially organized so that we know that things that are close together in the world are also close together in our brain. Now we know the aspects of the physical stimulus that are important: we funnel that info on the photoreceptors. As we move away from the physical stimulus and into the neural signal, we can think about the photoreceptors are pixels. The degree of signal coming from the photoreceptor tells us how much information there is. All photoreceptors do is give us information about darkness and lightness: we do not have the bigger pictures. Where do the photoreceptors send their signals: to the rgc. With a center-surround organization: they respond differently to light depending on where it is on their receptive eld.
