Different types of memory: sensory memory, wm/stm, ltm. Information processing is similar to computer: input processing output. Atkinson and shiffrin"s model: memory held very briefly in raw form in sensory register. Iconic (visual)- 0. 5 seconds and echoic (auditory)- 3-4 seconds. Stimuli sensory register stm/wm ltm. Executive control: manages processes between sensory register, Structural components: speed of processing (myelinations, synaptogenesis: creation of more connections) Capacity (memory span limits: auditory vs visual) Structural component: speed of processing, capacity, expanding knowledge. Recoding: grouping sets of items into meaningful categories. Expanded knowledge base: relationship between wm and ltm. Meaningful chess positions: recall is better in chess experts than chess novices. Random chess positions: recall is equal in chess experts and chess novices. Rehearsal: repeating the items out loud or in head. Use it more as you get older. Elaboration: creating a shared meaning between two unrelated items.
