Document Summary

Separation: the child"s emergence from a symbiotic fusion with his/her mother. Differentiation between mother & infants does not yet exist. Real physical separation help facilitate this process to a certain degree. Going the bathroom and child wakes up. Return results in the child understanding consistency. Parents who are inconsistent cause issues with children"s development. Individuation: achievements that mark the child"s assumption of his/her own individuality. Separation and individuation are two sides to the same coin. Awareness of separation is a precondition for true object relations (there has to be 2 separate entities for object relations). You have to have 2 people to have a relationship. Ego apparatuses and more complex functions (such as reality testing) cannot happen without this awareness (cognitive & affective components) Failures in separation-individuation processes can cause disturbances in the child"s self identity. Need to study normal development to understand deviations from the norm.
