CAS PS 354 Lecture 7: PS354-7
Document Summary
Documentary on mental illness in crime- investigative reports: mentally ill people who are put in prison often worsen in condition and come back into crime. Lawyers such as public defenders try to keep mentally ill people away from jail: mr. street is mentally unfit and has deteriorated. Society and the criminal would benefit a lot more if we let them just stay in community-based residences. If he is found innocent on an insanity plea he"ll be put in a psychiatric ward where he would get treatment. Only 9 cases in ny were given this. People are afraid people are using insanity as an excuse for behavior: after 1 year the defender convinces the course to get into a psychiatric ward. The difference is that time in a psychiatric ward is indefinite and dependent on the person condition and not exactly that much better than prison.
