Document Summary

This laboratory experiment focuses on the law of fixed chemical composition and the theoretical and actual percentage yield of a chemical reaction. The law of fixed chemical composition states that any sample of a chemical compound will be made up of the same elemental ratio. The first part of the experiment involved heating three different hydrates. Through the heating of the hydrates, cuso4 5h2o, niso4 7h2o, and cocl2 6h2o, water evaporated, thus being able to find the number of water molecules in each hydrate. Qualitative tests, the color test and reversibility test, were used to check the chemical compounds and their reaction. The color test shows whether the chemical reaction worked to completion by examining the color change of the sample after heating it. The reversibility test shows whether a chemical reaction is reversible by examining the change in color after adding water to the heated sample.
