Economic development plans 1955 = nasser = obtained a loan from the world bank to build a dam on the nile river in aswan, us & gb pledged to help finance the project. Nasser is good at playing one country off of another, did it w/ the us. Washington reneges on the deal 1956 = gb pulls out, world bank pulls out, us secretary of. State john foster dulles (why would we encourage cotton production, eco competitors?) Suez canal nationalized = 1956 nasser decision, shocked everyone, gb/fr stockholders especially.
