COM CM 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: William Zinsser, Interpersonal Communication
Document Summary
Interviewing supplies the quotes and human elements for a good story. The reader wants to get to know/like/relate to these people, which helps them relate to your story. Making the subject comfortable and building a trust is the most important part of the process. Steps for preparation: research the subject, get the necessary info, have the subject speak on that info. Know your stuff, but never act like you know more than your subject. The subject needs to trust that you"ll represent them accurately. Upon introducing yourself for the first time (ex. over phone or email), explain: who you are, what you"re doing, settle on a convenient time to meet (convenient for both you) Try to meet them on their turf offer to come to them (make them more comfortable) It"s always preferable to do the interview in person. Interpersonal communication: about 20% verbal, 80% non-verbal (body language, appearance, tone, gesture, etc. )
