Emerged in ancient times during the middle ages. Thought they were greater than other people in the population. Owned most of the land in europe. Had political, legal, and social rights others did not. Did not pay taxes (too good to pay them) In early modern era the profile of nobility changed. Nobility takes part in state building process. Went from being soldiers to having more practical jobs. Lived in cities more often than countryside. Wealth is invested in money and their own incomes. Emerged in middle ages as cities and towns grew. Paid most of the taxes in europe even though they couldn"t afford it. Free peasants: could leave the land if they wanted to, needed to get permission.
