Eleanor roosevelt & universal declaration of human rights (1948: hope post war era where human rights spread and be protected, not always case unfortunately. India: jawaharlal nehru (1889-1964) & mahatma gandhi (1869-1948) Gandhi use non-violent resistance methods b/c people cultivate sense of love: earned peaceful transition to independence from britain. Partition not peaceful religious strife: separate state for muslims (became pakistan) Experience at versailles turned him towards anti-imperialist view: communism with lenin. Nationalism focused on progress, acquisition of wealth and power of westernized nations. Vision for middle east was for gigantic era of super state: arab super state eliminate israel. Decades algeria was french colony (virtually part of france) Frantz fanon fought against fascism in wwii and fought against french: b/c process of colonization is very violent, so is decolonization. Many times u. s. says protecting democracy but really protecting economic interests.
