Form of government: autocracy-tsar is the ultimate ruler. Tsardom- romanov dynasty- last dynasty to rule russia. Russia is unique in which it follows eastern orthodox christianity - split to constantinople from roman. Tsar is representative of god on earth when patriarch moved. Tsar"s advisors think that peasant"s freedom would make peasants more productive. Nikolai (a waiter) was sick and goes back to his hometown ready to die. Nikolai reacts thinking that it"s nice to go back home, but no. He also has a romantic notion of how life was like when he was young. Problems with poverty, violence, drinking, illness, lack of religion. Sasha was able to read, which shocked the family. There were not schools for people to be able to read. Grandmother treated obligations to church as someone who follow the church rules so strictly. Grandma is educated that she can read bible and memorize scriptures. Only one who exhibited tendencies nikolai thought was religious.
