Peter the great (1672-1725), catherine the great (1762-1796)- wanted to westernize russia and turn russia away from the traditional russian culture. Peter traveled across all of europe to bring the culture and technology of europe and incorporate it into russian culture. Peter complained that the russian people, even upper class, worked backwards. Peter wanted his people to wear better clothes and shorter hair. Peter killed his son because his son was against. Peter- russia would only change if force them to change. Alexander ii (1855-1881)- no freedom of movement under alexander ii. First tsar to subsidizing schools (and established public schools). He wanted to develop factories and needed to have strong technology to do so. Being in the army was like life sentence; military reforms. Judiciary reforms as alexander ii had established judiciary system that is trial by peers.
